| Opening Theme Panhandle Rag Vasser Clements - Fiddle Doug Jernigan - Steel Guitar from the CD "Hillbilly Jazz" Flying Fish Michael Melford produced this Western Swing revival record in 1974. It was a double LP with a "gatefold" style jacket. Included inside was a small booklet with a background history of Western Swing by Rick Ulman with many great pictures. The CD re-issue unfortunately has no notes at all. Every time I here the opening licks of Doug Jernigan's steel guitar and the textured tones of Vasser's jazzy fiddle, it puts a smile on my face! |
Alternate Opening Theme Panhandle Rag Leon McAuliffe and his Western Swing Band from the 78 RPM Columbia 20456 Recorded: 1/9/49 in Dallas Re-issued on the CD "Hillbilly Fever Vol. 1 Legends of Western Swing" Rhino Records Steel guitarist Leon McAuliffe wrote this tune and it was a big hit for him when he recorded it in 1949. The sax solo is by Murel Wayne Johnson. I love saxophone in Western Swing! Leon was Bob Wills' first steel guitar player and with Bob made the "Steel Guitar Rag" a Western Swing and steel players' standard. |
Closing Theme Rollin' Along The Prairie Ramblers from the 78 RPM Okeh 06102 recorded: 1/28/41 in Chicago re-issued on the Tishomingo Records LP "Rollin' Along" Not many of the Tishomingo LPs were ever manufactured and today it is a rare collectors item. The song has never been re-issued on CD as far as I know. The Prairie Ramblers were favorites on the WLS Barn Dance, and also known for backing up Patsy Montana on her biggest recordings. |
